Manchester United 1-1 Liverpool

After a good win at home to Hull city in the EFL cup, United hosted a rejuvenated Liverpool side who were looking for anything but three points at Old Trafford. United with a win would be level on points with Manchester City in 5th place after their side was smashed 4-0 by Ronald Koeman's Everton. The game saw the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic who recovered from illness in time to face Liverpool. Liverpool were without Mane who had departured for the AFCON and Joel Matip who was banned by FA after refusing to play in the AFCON. Philippe Countinho was named on the bench along Daniel Sturridge and a young debutante Alexander-Arnold started at rightback in place of Nathaniel Clyne. Manchester United started with the usual with Rojo and Jones at centreback, Valencia and Darmian at rightback and leftback respectively. Carrick, Herrera and Pogba in midfield, Mkhitaryan and Martial on the wing with Zlatan upfront. The game started rather unusually, as Paul Pogba's bizarre handball gave away a penalty to Liverpool which was sealed by James Milner to give Liverpool the lead. Many missed opportunities by Pogba and Mkhitaryan as it remained 1-0 at half time. United were looking desperately to score an equalizer and maybe even win the game. The hard work eventually paid off as Fellaini's header hit the post which was then crossed back to Zlatan by Valencia who headed home the equalizer for the Red Devils. The match ended in a draw with United remaining two points behind City in fifth place. In other news, Memphis Depay's transfer to Lyon was confirmed by the club also indicating a buyback clause in the deal. Up next for United was a trip to Stoke on Saturday in the Premier League, will they get the three points?

A step closer to Wembley


Jose Mourinho was looking to book Manchester United's place in the EFL cup final as they hosted a struggling Hull City at home in the first leg of the EFL cup. Paul Pogba was looking to finish the game with a big score so there is no trouble when they travel to Hull in the second leg. Mourinho had announced a strong lineup but started without Zlatan Ibrahimovic who ruled out due to illness, that meant Wayne Rooney started up front.
The first half remained deadlocked as Hull keeper Jakupovic made some crucial saves to deny United's Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney. In the second half, Henrikh Mkhitaryan's header was tapped in by Juan Mata who gave United the lead. The game remained pretty tight as United looked for a second goal. Marouanne Fellaini was brought on who was rumored to leave United for AC Milan. He ended up scoring United's crucial second goal after met by Darmian's cross. The match ended 2-0 for Man United and now they had to defend their lead in the second leg to book a ticket to Wembly to face either Southampton or Liverpool.

Manchester United begin FA Cup defence


Nine months after winning the FA cup, Manchester United began their title defense at home to championship side Reading. This fixture also saw the return of former United player Jaap Stam, who was now the manager of Reading. United had rested Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba for United's English League cup game against Hull City. Wayne Rooney captained a strong United side, Wayne Rooney looked to break Sir Bobby Charlton's record, Rooney with 248 goals just one behind the great legend. The game started off real well as Wayne Rooney scored the goal which brought him level with Sir Bobby Charlton, a landmark for the skipper. Anthony Martial later doubled the lead with a curling shot into the bottom corner. Marcus Rashford scored a brace in the second half as Manchester United won 4-0. Up next was a league cup semi-final against Hull City. United are to host Wigan Atheltic in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

New year, same Manchester United

Manchester United were in fine form and were unbeaten in 11 league games, last time this happened was in the Sir Alex Ferguson era, they hosted Middlesbrough at home before travelling to West Ham a day later, a very busy weekend for the Red Devils.
In the match against Middlesbrough, David De Gea was in goal, Bailly and Smalling paired at the back, Valencia and Blind as full backs. Carrick was ruled out of the match due to illness but was expected to return on Monday, Wayne Rooney was sidelined due to an ankle injury and was in doubt for the game on Monday against West Ham. Marouanne Fellaini, Pogba and Herrera were in midfield, Martial and Mkhitaryan on the wing with Ibrahimovic upfront as always.
United started the match with dominance but also saw a clear goal being disallowed as referee Lee Mason gave a fouk against Ibrahimovic on former United player Victor Valdes. Things got worse in the second half as Middlesbrough's patience paid off, as Grant Leadbitter scored the opener after being set up by Alvaro Negredo, and slotted it past David De Gea.
A goal meant that Middlesbrough now had to defend and keep hold of that precious 1-0 lead, but United weren't ready to give up easily.
Paul Pogba's long ball found Ibrahimovic who laid it on to Martial's path who scored the equalizer in the 85th minute, salvation for the Red Devils. But things were quite not over yet, seconds let Juan Mata's cross found Paul Pogba who headed it into the goal and left Valdes standing, Manchester United with a superb comeback and were on the verge of a 6th straight win.
The match ended in United's favour as they win 2-1 up next was a trip to West Ham just two days later.



Michael Carrick was back in the starting XI, Anthony Martial was dropped to the bench and Rojo and Jones were paired at the back, Darmian returned at leftback. The match started quite unusual as Sofiane Feghouli was sent off by referee Mike Dean for a tackle on Phil Jones, West Ham reduced to 10 men in the first 20 minutes but managed to keep the score 0-0 till half time.
Jose Mourinho the brought on Mata from the bench in place of Darmian, and Carrick moved to centre back position, later Lingard was taken off for Marcus Rashford and the subsitution paid off as Rashforf set up Juan Mata as Manchester United took the lead and broke the deadlock, minutes later Zlatan Ibrahimovic sealed the game with a thumping shot which ended the game in United's favour, this was their 7 straight win and were now unbeaten in 13 league games. United remained in 6th, level on points with Tottenham who are to face Chelsea on Wednesday.
